Written by Cape Fear Solar | Mar 31, 2026 4:57:50 PM

Project Snapshot

  • System Size: 300 kW
  • Panels: 659
  • Annual Production: ~391,563 kWh
  • Energy Offset: 67-70%
  • Primary Objective: Power operations with renewable energy and advance sustainability leadership
  • Installation Type: Rooftop solar arrays

The Client & Operational Context

Walex Products Company is a global manufacturer and distributor of odor control and sanitation products, with a strong local presence in Leland, NC.

Known for sustainability innovation within their industry, Walex has consistently prioritized sustainability as a core part of their business strategy. The goal was not only to reduce operating costs, but to further embed sustainability into their brand, operations, and product identity.

The Challenge

The project required balancing energy production with the operational demands of a manufacturing facility. Walex needed a system that could offset a significant portion of its electricity usage while maintaining reliability for production processes.

At the same time, the solar installation needed to align with broader sustainability initiatives and support long-term environmental goals, all while integrating seamlessly into daily operations.

The Strategy

High-Impact Energy Offset

The system was designed to offset the majority of the facility’s electricity usage, targeting a range that would significantly reduce grid dependence while maintaining operational flexibility.

Operational Integration

Installation and system design ensured seamless integration with manufacturing processes, allowing the facility to maintain consistent production without disruption.

Scalable Sustainability Approach

The solar installation was positioned as a foundational step in a broader sustainability strategy, allowing Walex to build on its environmental initiatives over time.

Industry Leadership Positioning

By adopting solar early and integrating it into operations, Walex positioned itself at the forefront of sustainability within the sanitation and odor control industry.

The Solution

The installation includes a 300 kW rooftop solar array composed of 659 high-efficiency panels, generating approximately 391,563 kWh annually. The system offsets 67–70% of the facility’s electricity usage, providing a substantial reduction in energy costs while supporting day-to-day manufacturing operations.

The Results

Financial Impact

The solar installation reduces long-term energy costs by offsetting a significant portion of electricity usage. This provides more predictable operating expenses and supports efficient, cost-effective manufacturing.

Operational Impact

Solar now powers the majority of the facility’s production needs, reducing reliance on grid electricity while maintaining consistent performance. The system operates seamlessly alongside existing processes, ensuring uninterrupted manufacturing.

Community Impact

Walex continues to strengthen its role as a sustainability leader within the Leland community while reinforcing its commitment to responsible manufacturing practices.

Brand & Market Impact

Walex has integrated its solar investment directly into its brand and product identity. Packaging now includes a “made by the sun” designation, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability. As an early adopter of both recyclable packaging and solar energy in its industry, Walex has set a new standard for environmentally responsible manufacturing.

This commitment has also supported stronger relationships with retail partners, contributing to improved product placement and increased visibility in stores.

System Performance Snapshot

  • 300 kW solar array
  • 659 high-efficiency panels
  • 391,563 kWh annual energy production
  • 67–70% of facility electricity usage offset
  • Rooftop system integrated with manufacturing operations

Why It Matters

This project demonstrates how sustainability can move beyond operations and become a core business advantage. By integrating solar energy into both manufacturing and brand identity, Walex has strengthened its market position while reducing environmental impact.

Their approach shows how manufacturers can align cost savings, operational efficiency, and brand differentiation into a single, cohesive strategy.

Client Perspective
