GLOW Academy | Commercial Case Study

Project Snapshot

  • System Size: 300 kW
  • Panels: 660
  • Annual Production: ~409,761 kWh
  • Energy Offset: 54%
  • Primary Objective: Reduce operating expenses and support educational initiatives
  • Installation Type: Rooftop solar arrays
  • Notable Distinction: Largest solar system on a school in eastern North Carolina (as of 2024)

The Client & Operational Context

GLOW Academy is a public charter school in Wilmington focused on empowering students through education and leadership development. Like many schools, managing long-term operating expenses is critical to maintaining resources for students and staff.

School leadership sought a solution that could reduce monthly energy costs while also serving as a meaningful educational tool. The goal was to implement a system that not only improved financial stability but also created opportunities for students to engage with real-world applications of science, technology, and energy.

The Challenge

The project required balancing financial efficiency with educational value. The system needed to generate enough energy to meaningfully reduce operating costs while also being accessible and relevant as a teaching resource.

In addition, funding was a key consideration. Identifying and leveraging available incentives and rebate programs was essential to making the project financially viable for the school.

The Strategy

Cost Reduction Through Solar

The system was designed to offset a significant portion of the school’s electricity usage, helping stabilize monthly expenses and support long-term budgeting.

Incentive Optimization

Utility rebate programs were incorporated into the project to reduce upfront costs and improve overall financial feasibility.

Education Integration

The solar system was positioned as a hands-on learning tool, allowing students to engage directly with concepts related to electricity, renewable energy, and sustainability.

Future-Focused Infrastructure

The project aligned with broader sustainability initiatives, including electrification efforts and exposure to clean energy careers.

The Solution

The installation includes a 300 kW rooftop solar array composed of 660 high-efficiency panels, generating approximately 409,761 kWh annually. The system provides substantial energy cost savings while also serving as an interactive educational resource for students.

By integrating solar into the campus, GLOW Academy created a dual-purpose solution that supports both financial sustainability and student learning.

The Results

Financial Impact

The system is projected to deliver $1,147,370 in savings over 25 years by reducing electricity costs. This allows the school to allocate more resources toward educational programs and student support.

Operational Impact

Solar energy now supports a significant portion of the school’s daily energy needs, reducing reliance on grid electricity and stabilizing operating expenses. The system also positions the campus for future sustainability initiatives, including electrification.

Community Impact

GLOW Academy has become a regional leader in sustainability for educational institutions. In 2024, the school was awarded a federal grant to purchase its first electric school bus, further advancing its commitment to clean energy.

The solar installation also serves as a hands-on learning platform, giving students direct exposure to renewable energy systems. This creates opportunities to explore electricity fundamentals, understand how solar works, and learn about careers in the energy industry.

System Performance Snapshot

  • 300 kW solar array
  • 660 high-efficiency panels
  • 409,761 kWh annual energy production
  • Largest solar system on a school in eastern North Carolina (as of 2024)
  • $1,147,370 projected 25-year savings

Why It Matters

This project demonstrates how solar can deliver value beyond cost savings. By combining financial benefits with educational impact, GLOW Academy has created a model for how schools can integrate sustainability into both operations and curriculum.

The system not only reduces expenses but also prepares students for the future by exposing them to renewable energy concepts and career pathways.
